“Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another.” – Romans 12:10

As a fledgling university student I recall discussing with my father Charles, a seasoned civil servant, the need for a Governor General and a Prime Minister in a small country such as Barbados. He calmly and profoundly said to me “whereas the PM is the leader of the government in the execution of its day-to-day activities, the GG is the symbol of national unity.” That stuck with me.

As Barbados continues to forge its path as an independent republic, the role of the President has become increasingly significant. As a symbol of national unity, the President embodies the spirit of the nation, fostering a sense of shared identity and purpose among citizens.

It is imperative that the President, and indeed all leaders, uphold the principles enshrined in the Constitution of Barbados, ensuring that governance is of the people, by the people, and for the people.

In a thriving democracy (if that is the way we want to continue), elected representatives are accountable to the citizens who voted them into office. The President, as a key figurehead, must champion equality, transparency and accountability, ensuring that the government serves the interests of all Barbadians. Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of democracy, and it is crucial that all voices are heard, and all opinions respected.

Independent governance oversight is vital in monitoring the execution of manifesto promises and ensuring that the government remains true to its commitments along with other institutions enshrined in the constitution. Trust is the bedrock of democracy, and it is earned through transparent actions, accountability and a commitment to serving the people.

As Barbados looks to the future, it is essential that all citizens respect the institutions of governance, including the President and the Constitution. By doing so, we strengthen our democracy, promote unity and build a brighter future for all.
