“Then the Lord answered me and said: ‘Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it.’” – Habakkuk 2:2
Sustainable economic growth in a country depends on the economic success of its network of business enterprises over many sectors. The micro, small, medium, large enterprises within each sector combine seamlessly to form an Economic Gearing System (EGS).
On August 14, 2020, Chris Mellen, Managing Director with Valuation Research Corporation (VRC), a U.S.-based globally focused entity, wrote an article on Top 10 Drivers to Enhance Company Value.
He concluded: “Ongoing assessment of a company’s value drivers is integral to its success. The valuation process involves both a quantitative and a qualitative assessment of a company that should be part of any business owner’s standard operating procedure as a useful and important business management exercise. A valuation assessment can provide the business owner with meaningful and oftentimes actionable information that highlights the real intrinsic value of the firm and ultimately maximize returns.”
The business management column writing sector can provide value as the country develops through a service which facilitates the development of business enterprises.
In this context, I have further synthesized Mellen’s 10 drivers into five elements, as is my wont, without any loss of generality. These are: positive commentary, national financial security, widespread messaging, shepherding, and unlocking human potential.
My story today is about the business management column writing sector and how it too can provide value as countries develop.
My business management column is a piece of writing intended for a large audience. The main motive behind it is to share positive commentary on solutions to business management problems which incorporate international experience as well as shared feedback. Readers respond inspirationally, with added perspectives, seeking help with their own businesses, whatever the primary sector they are in.
In the spirit of the principle, “it is more blessed to give than to receive”, I write my columns as a community service. I modestly expect that it will vicariously contribute to vision, partnership, excellence, economic growth, which then, company by company, leads to the financial security of a country.
Initially the column was published in The Barbados Advocate newspaper and then a blog entitled “St. Lucia Simply Beautiful”. Recently, the Barbados Today online multimedia news resource requested that I share it with them.
Over the years it has been published throughout the Caribbean, across the Diaspora, and only last week there was a request from a Canadian publisher to continually reproduce content.
Additionally, it is now branded as a Marketplace Excellence (MPE) product. MPE distributes it through their social media channels and to thousands of international readers via its impressive distribution service each week. The response from readers has been stellar. There have also been requests to have it reproduced on radio, but this has not yet been implemented.
The production of the service of a weekly business management column is no easy task. It encompasses choosing a topic, research, composition, and coordination with the graphics and communications team. Hopefully the contributions that my column has made to business rehabilitation, startups, requests for help, and MBA students, have fostered socioeconomic growth.
The MPE human resource management culture is to immerse you in the deep end but to make sure that your life vest is safely maintained and securely fastened. Survival support is within easy reach and rewards are achievable. The column service has been no exception.
My hope is that many others will take pen to paper to share their thoughts and experiences for the benefit of local, regional and global audiences.
