“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” – Psalm 46:1

As the world grapples with geopolitical turmoil, Barbados must adapt and evolve to ensure its survival and prosperity. The island nation, born out of the vision of National Hero Errol Barrow, must now chart a new course, guided by the leadership of Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley.

The current global landscape demands a revised vision, one that prioritizes resilience, innovation, and inclusivity. Barbados’ social partnership must pivot to address the pressing needs of its citizens, informed by the philosophy of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

The pillars of the internal environment – strategic management, technical operations, marketing, ICT, AI, finance, administrative operations, human resource development, and legal issues – must be leveraged to drive growth, development and sustainability. Externally, Barbados must navigate market potential, technological innovation, social factors, economic factors, legal issues, and political factors.

The country’s strengths lie in its educated workforce, export enterprise potential, strategic location, and natural resources including sun, beaches, arable land, marine, freshwater (aquifer and desalination) resources. However, challenges such as climate change, financial (including an equity growth fund) innovation and restructuring, and governance oversight must be addressed.

We need to stop talking, eliminate implementation deficit disorder and get the show on the road. Strong leadership is required at all levels.

Here is a proposed GOSPA according to Barbados – (1) Goals: Achieve sustainable economic growth, use every acre of agricultural land for production, reduce inequality, and enhance climate resilience. (2) Objectives: Diversify the economy, focusing on tourism, fintech, export entrepreneurship and renewable energy; Implement climate-smart infrastructure and disaster risk management; strengthen governance and institutional capacity. (3) Strategies: Foster public-private partnerships to drive innovation and investment; develop a skilled workforce, emphasizing STEM education and vocational training; enhance regional and international cooperation to address shared challenges. (4) Plans and Actions: Develop a national development plan, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals; establish a climate resilience fund, leveraging international finance and expertise; implement governance reforms, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Barbados’ revised vision must prioritize its citizens’ needs, leverage its strengths and address its challenges. By doing so, the country can navigate the turbulent times and emerge stronger, more resilient, and prosperous.

The implementation process involves setting clear goals, objectives, strategies, and plans, with a focus on governance, innovation, and regional cooperation.
